Netherlands PM Wants To Ban Weed And Hasj?

Dutch PM, Jan Peter Balkenende, wants to ban coffeeshops. This is the underlying theme I got from a recent Dutch news item which seems not to have hit the international English language press. Well, theguest brings you an exclusive courtesy of his effort to translate from Dutch to English with the help of Google Translate!

Prime Minister Seeks Alternative Drugs Policy
Premier moet streven naar ander drugsverdrag

MAASTRICHT / BRUSSELS - Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende will meet with other countries in order to agree new international drugs treaties. The existing treaty dating from the 60s has been hindered thus far by The Netherlands, where soft drugs are allowed.

Supporters include former Prime Minister Dries van Agt, former Health Minister Els Borst and mayor Gerd Leers of Maastricht.

They found the current cannabis policy to be no longer credible and effective. In addition to the user of cannabis, the production of it and supply of it to coffeeshops was also tolerated by Dutch governments, despite contravening international treaties.

Therefore, it is high time (hehe, high time, lol!) that treaties should adapt, according to the reasoning of the signatories of the letter to Prime Minister Balkenende.

Among them are mayors Riid Vreeman (Tilburg) and Thom de Graaf (Nijmegen), MEP Kathalijne Buitenweg (GroenLinks), and the korpschefs (anyone know what a korpschef is??) from the regions of Limburg South and Central and West Brabant.

In 2008, the United Nations will hold a conference on drugs policy. "In 1998, UN countries spoke of the world in 2008 as being drug free". The repressive approach has completely failed. It is clear that we, in 2008, must choose a new approach," says MEP Buitenweg.

Well, I hope you liked my translation, I am sure it is full of errors so please point them out, but you should get the general gist.

Anyway, what do you think this holds for the future?

Will we see the Dutch tow the line and succumb to UN pressure on the "War On Drugs"? I sure hope not. I know that the guys on Wiet.nl are worried. What do you think? Please leave some comments! Thanks

  • Hey matey!

Interesting article but my reading of your translation is completely different. Next year is, as we know, 10 years since the Drug Free World nonsense was peddled by the UN. There are gonna be meetings about this, with plenty of pressure being heaped upon the Dutch for their alternative approach. Some MEPs and assorted luminaries have sent a letter to the PM saying that the repressive approach hasn't worked and the Dutch model is sound.

More positive than negative, imo :-)

  • Help! I am a 44 year old male and a casual pot smoker for 33 of those years. I want to make connections so I thought I look toward blogging which, as a 44 year old, I'm not as familar with as today's kids are.

Anyway, how can one make connections and safely converse? What are the legal dangers? Are there police traps in the blogs? What are the best blogs and/or web sites?
