You CAN still smoke tobacco in coffeeshops!

Just got back from the Dam and it is as people have been saying - you can still get away with smoking tobacco in your joints if that's how you like them.

I saw a lot of people adding tobacco but they did it discreetly.

Let's face it, this new law may be enforced in pubs or clubs - all one has to do is look for the tell-tale sign of smoke or a cigarette.

But looking at a joint, how do you know if it contains tobacco or not? Can you ask someone to destroy their joint and spill out the contents? Surely coffeeshop proprietors are not expected to do that?

So in every coffeeshop I visited I smoked tobacco, and only 3 or 4 of those actually had dedicated tobacco areas.

All in all a nice couple of nights away to forget about everything and just get wrecked on weed and hash.

Pretty much everything I smoked was good, unless you're buying from the bottom of the menu I think its hard to smoke anything crap in Amsterdam.

I tried the "Cheese" from Homegrown Fantasy for the first time. A few years back they were always sold out. I don't know why people make such a big deal out of "Cheese" and other weird names, it was nothing special and did not smell weird. In fact, it was not cured very well either!

New on my shit list is Route 66 coffeeshop on Warmoestraat. I used to frequent this place a lot, especially when Dora worked there as she did for several years. The owners themselves have always looked like a bunch of miserable bastards but the people they hire are generally pretty good.

Anyway they were closed last time I was in town and have now reopened with a new decor inside and most of the shop officially allowing tobacco smoking. I don't normally buy weed or hash there but you are now obliged to - fair enough. I score some Casablanca hash and it was very tasty indeed. I return a day later and say I bought some Casablanca. The bitch doesn't believe me. She tells me to produce the hash and I do and she says "it didn't come from here". I swore on my mother's life it came from there and the bitch still told me it didn't.

So I walked out. Never go to Route 66. Fuck them!

Otherwise I went to the same usual places: Hunters, Hill Street Blues, Sheeba, Siberie, Homegrown Fantasy, De Tweede Kamer, Barneys, etc.

All in all a good trip and more than 6 months since my last! Way too long! Gotta get out there soon again. Especially as hotel fares are really good, my hotel was half of what it is in summer, it was only 30 Euro a night! Not bad for a 2 star with TV and own toilet and shower, and basic breakfast.

  • Thanks, theguest, for an up-to-date A'dam report. Sorry to hear about Route 66. Maybe the pressure of the government to close 'shops is getting to cs owners and workers. I haven't been back to the Dam since 2004, but anxious for another visit ASAP. Where did you stay for 30E/night with tv and own toilet!? Did you happen to notice the old Kabul Hotel on Warmoesstraat? Did it still look shut down?

  • Hey Ivan,

Wow 2004 eh? And I thought 6 months away was too much! I hope you get back there soon.

Yes, I stayed at Hotel Vijaya, you can check em out through the banner at the top of the site.

Incredible price and I always return there. Been going for about 5 years now. Never had it as cheap as 30 though. By comparison it was 60 in the summer. It is not far from the Kabul, just opposite the Febo and the bridge where a lot of street dealers used to hang out.

As for the Kabul I kept my eyes peeled and wherever it is now is completely unrecognisable. I fear the Kabul is gone and have no idea what it is being replaced with.

By Blogger theguest, at Friday, January 16, 2009 5:23:00 PM

  • The Vijaya sounds like a good deal. Certainly its location is excellent. I read user reviews at one of those Travel review sites and Vijaya had people who loved it and people who didn't much care for it. Got a 6/10. Still, if I end up going solo on my next trip, I'd give it look.

Enjoying your other blog posts, as I do everything concerning Amsterdam. An obsession we share, it seems.

Some friends passed by the Kabul in August 2007 and it was boarded up. Guess its a memory of days gone bye.

I have a pic of the Kabul from 1970 and over a hundred more A'dam pix at www.flickr.com/photos/adobepillow if you'd care to take a peek. Do you post photos there?

  • Hey Ivan,

Yes the Vijaya is a little shabby for some who expect more. Plus the walls are thin.

But they keep it really clean, the price and service is good etc. I don't want to sell it too much or it will be booked up every time I try to go there!

If anyone reads this and wants to stay, it would be great if you could use the hotel booking banner at the top of my site. I get a small commission and that would be nice.

btw I've seen that Kabul pic before, I did not know it was taken by a Channelite! I even posted it on Channels I think.

I love the old colour scheme, man I would have loved to visit the Dam in 60s and 70s. Were there many coffeeshops back then?

I would love to get my hands on more pics and videos from that era around the main RLD area.

  • Howdy theguest! Sure wish I could go there twice a year! I am currently in post-retirement financial shock. This is similar to sticker shock. My wife has gone back to work and I'm home being the house-husband. I love to cook so that part doesn't bother me, but house-cleaning is not my favorite task. Perhaps this is what fuels my fantasies about the next trip to the Dam.

I keep a folder handy entitled "Amster-Next" where I scribble ideas on things to do and places to see next trip. Its a thick folder. Keeps me from going mad. Haha.

'70 and '73 were my first two trips to Amsterdimple. Details from those visits tend to melt together. I don't remember seeing any coffeeshops back then. We stayed at the Kabul ($2 a night). I vaguely remember being caught up in the crowds of "hippies" being chased off Dam Square by the Dutch Marines. I also recall walking up to the Paradiso past a half-a-block long gauntlet of hash dealers (a dollar a gram!). Oh how i wish i had a digi-cam back then! When you reached the door, presumably a handful of guilders lighter, a sign read something like "Anyone caught with hasj will be asked to leave." What a joke, as soon you paid your membership and walked inside there were people selling hasj pipes and the place was redolent with the wonderful aroma of freshly sparked sheesh. Truly Paradise!

This winter I'm going through all my old photo albums and scanning the best pix. Hopefully there will be a few from Amsterdam hiding there that I missed when I went through these albums a few years ago.

Now that i'm retired and time is a bit more "on my side" I plan to devote time to Channels posting and FLICKR. There are 10's of 1000's of A'dam pix at FLICKR, more every day. For me its the next best thing to being there.

The Vijaya location description you gave - "opposite the FEBO and the bridge where street dealers used to hang out" sounds like one of my FLICKR pix from 2004 whose location I haven't been able to pinpoint. Gotta go back and check it out.

But first i have to do the grocery shopping. Ciao for niao!

  • Hey Ivan,

I hope your dreams can come true and you can get back to Amsterdam soon.

Sounds like amazing times you had back in the early 70s. I've only been to Amsterdam for the last 10 years or so and I see the sad effects of globalisation on this wonderful city - 70s must have been wild in comparison!

Incidentally, I once found a pic on flickr somewhere of Lange Niezel, the road close to the Vijaya (the road that turns into the bridge with Febo on the other side) dated around 1980 or so. I love the advanced search on flickr, you can search for old photos so long as people have inputted the dates correctly. I've found lots of 70s pics and even 60s pics!

By Blogger theguest, at Thursday, January 29, 2009 11:26:00 PM

  • btw this is the old pic looking down lange niezel with bridge behind the photographer I was talking about:

    Modern day pic for comparison:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/skintype/136966202/

The only things I recognise in the old photo apart from the bar/cafe on the left at the front are the Spanish restaurant further down on the right and the sex cinema further down on the left :D Oh and the house at the end of the street.

Vijaya is just to the right of the photographer.

By Blogger theguest, at Thursday, January 29, 2009 11:31:00 PM

  • That photo from 1980 looks just as modern as the one from 2006. Are we stuck in a time warp? Has nothing much changed?

My photo that I think was taken in the area of the Vijaya is
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/adobepillow/2105457765/

Does it look to you like that part of town?

    Happy weekend!

  • Hi me and my bro just got back from amsterdam on monday night our first time there it was brilliant most of the coffeeshops we went into had herbal mix but you can still use tobacco too as long as ur discreet about it greenhouse coffeeshop was my favourite as it had a big selection of WEED & HASH at cheap prices staff are friendly and helpful inside the place was really nice loads of pics of celebrities on the wall who have visited greenhouse so if ur in amsterdam i would reccomend going to the greenhouse. red light district not far from there about 5 mins walk that was good there TOO we stayed at the rookies hotel/uptown has its own coffeeshop down the stairs that was ideal 44euros each a night inc. breakfast really nice place staff were very friendly and helpful wish we were still there thinking about getting a job there that would be sound.

By Anonymous rob, at Sunday, February 01, 2009 2:27:00 PM

  • Hey Ivan, yep that's the one. The Vijaya is just the left side of that bridge instead of the right from where the pic was taken.

That area used to be really dodgy at night, even 5 years ago but now it seems to be fine.

    Strange but true!

By Blogger theguest, at Thursday, February 05, 2009 12:23:00 PM

  • Hey rob,

    Thanks for your comment.

Yes I have not tried the herbal mix and did as you did too. I actually took some stuff called Knaster herbal mix with me but never used it. Glad I didn't too!

Never stayed at the Rookies but have heard good things about it. I wonder if they do single rooms. I always go on my own to Amsterdam because none of my friends love it as much as I do. Plus going on your own means you do what you want instead of always compromising.

That said, if I had buddies who always wanted to go then I would hook up for sure.

Dude, great that you want to work out there. Now make it a reality!! At your age, most people get more and more "realistic" and drop their heads down and say goodbye to their ambitions over the next few years.

I highly recommend you don't become that and grab onto your dreams. Make a plan to get out there within one year. That's what I did last June and I'm hopeful I can still pull it off by June this year. Go for it man!! :D

By Blogger theguest, at Thursday, February 05, 2009 12:27:00 PM

  • Before coffeeshops were very popular you could buy hash in the Milk Weg. You had to join for I think 5 or 10 guilders and then inside there were dealers setup around tables selling pipes. This was in about 1975 and also in 1978 I was there as well. The hash of choice in those years was Paki Black. There were a few coffeeshops but not so visible that it was known about. Staying in the youth hostel I must have asked people where to get, tho I once bought from the bloke cleaning the floors there.
